This is an analysis of the game A Short Hike, which I played on my PlayStation 4. The purpose of this blog was to help me explore the world and create an atmosphere for myself.
“A Short Hike” is a game that has been released for the PlayStation 4. The game is about a man who wakes up in the middle of nowhere and must find his way home before nightfall.
You have to play a lot of games as a professional game critic, and not all of them are winners. When you start playing several of them, you have a fairly decent sense of what you’re getting yourself into. You may have great hopes for some, only to be severely disappointed. The most of the time, it’s about wading through a sea of mediocrity in search of anything engaging. In oversaturated genres, anything that sticks out from the crowd. Then, every now and then, you’ll come upon a rare jewel that will thrill you. Unexpectedly, there was a diamond in the rough. A Short Hike is a gem by Adamgryu, a Canadian independent developer.
Hawk Peak is a genuinely spectacular location.
Now, I’ll be honest and say that I was first uninterested in playing this game. It seems to be nothing more than a slice of life game from the clip, which isn’t exactly my cup of tea. I don’t get much pleasure from caring to my crops or cutting down trees merely for the sake of it. In a game, I need to have a better justification for doing things. As a result, Spiritfarer became a favorite of mine.
I didn’t fall in love with the game merely because I had to create new assets for my ship and prepare new dishes. No, the deeper ties I built with my passengers and the feeling of loss I felt when they ultimately went on were the reasons I found that game so meaningful. Crafting and housework were then used as a therapeutic background for a greater, more important drama.
Every adolescent’s worst fear.
A Short Hike follows a journey that is comparable to Spiritfarer in certain ways. It’s not because you’re transporting souls to the hereafter or something. I mean, it’s comparable in the sense that behind the adorable and task-filled journey lies a story about something bigger. You play as Claire, a young bluebird who sets out to ascend Hawk Peak Provincial Park’s highest peak in order to get mobile phone service. The concept seems to be as shallow as a puddle on the surface, yet there’s a lot more to learn about the island’s people and Claire herself than you would think.
How much you get out of A Short Hike is largely determined by how much time and effort you put into it. You only have one major goal: to reach the summit of Hawk Peak in order to make a phone call. The title is also not deceiving; this might be a very short game. If you solely focus on the primary goal, you can easily complete the game in under an hour. However, you are unlikely to want to.
She’s feisty, so watch your tone around her.
You may interact with a variety of charming and amusing anthropomorphic residents on the island. Others will provide you information about the island, some will give you ideas on how to get to more difficult-to-reach regions, and some will seek for your assistance with different difficulties. Consider it a cross between Animal Crossing and Breath of the Wild, with a vast universe, entertaining characters, and engrossing exploration. You’ll discover more about the island and its people if you agree to help the natives with their jobs. A Short Hike’s missions are what make it such a fascinating game.
When playing A Short Hike, you may choose from a number of various activities. Collecting Golden Feathers is one of the few goals that must be completed. Claire will be able to ascend portions of the mountain using them, which will operate as a type of stamina meter. The more she discovers, the higher she can go. To reach the pinnacle of Hawk Peak, she’ll need a minimum of seven Golden Feathers. If you’re up for the task, there are a total of twenty.
Golden Feathers may be discovered across the island and can even be won by completing specific tasks.
Watering the flowers all across the island to make them bloom and providing you with a convenient springboard to easily reach higher spots are two more activities. Parkour races, speedboat challenges, Beachstickball, gathering seashells, excavating riches in soft soil, treasure hunts, and more activities are available. The amount of quest variation presented in A Short Hike actually surprised me.
There’s also fishing, which should come as no surprise given that the game is set on an island. The fishing gameplay is comparable to that of a The Legend of Zelda game, although it’s a lot simpler. After all, this is a lighthearted experience. Fish may be traded for cash, bait, a fishing diary, and ultimately a Golden Rod, which can catch all of the rare fish types. I keep getting hooked on fishing (I’ll see myself out) for some reason, much as in the Zelda games.
Asking a youngster to be patient is a difficult task. Good luck with it.
There are a few missions that are a little more emotional, but none of them are tearjerkers. A bunny racer is looking for her fortunate headband, which she has lost. A ram has misplaced his priceless wristwatch and needs your help to recover it. An budding artist may lack confidence in herself, and your comments might provide her with the motivation she needs. These missions, in particular, contribute to A Short Hike’s richness. If you want to get the most out of your trip, you should assist everyone you can.
Are you a… Is it true that you are Raphael?
Aside from the multiple tasks available, a large part of the enjoyment in A Short Hike comes from just exploring. In every area of Hawk Peak, there are a plethora of mysteries to be discovered. It’s also very beautiful, particularly considering the low-resolution pixelated polygonal images. I’ll confess that the game looks less appealing when spread out over a huge screen, so if you can, I’d prefer playing it in portable mode on the Nintendo Switch. Even if you don’t own a Switch, many of the locations are so beautiful and unique for such a little sandbox game that you’ll soon forget about the graphics flaws.
The audio is incredible and really transforms the game experience. This is one of those uncommon soundtracks that lingers with you, thanks to Mark Sparling’s original music. Because there is no voice acting and just a few sound effects, the emotional tone is mostly carried by the musical soundtrack. For future listening pleasure, I’ve already added the music to my study playlist.
Mine is a sweet triumph!
I can’t suggest A Short Hike highly enough. The trailer is both deceiving and accurate in terms of what you may anticipate. It’s up to you to decide what kind of experience you’ll have and what you’ll get out of it. If you solely concentrate on going to the summit of the mountain and skip the side activities, you’ll likely be dissatisfied, particularly since you can do so in under an hour. You’ll have a remarkably rich and satisfying experience if you take your time completely exploring the island and assisting the inhabitants. A Short Hike is an adventure you’ll never forget.
It’s very lovely, particularly considering the low-resolution pixelated polygonal images. However, I would suggest playing in handheld mode on the Nintendo Switch so that the pixels aren’t stretched as much. |
The controls are snappy, and the missions and activities available are a surprising amount of variation. |
The music by Mark Sparling is incredible — one of the greatest I’ve heard in a long time. |
You’ll have a rich and pleasantly satisfying experience if you take your time, visit the whole island, and assist the locals when you can. |
Final Score: 9.0 |
