At the top of this year, Dwayne Johnson released Red Notice, a film that is an action movie with explosions and blood. The film has garnered mixed evaluation from critics but remains popular among audiences. On Rotten Tomatoes it currently holds 56%.

Rawson Marshall Thurber makes no attempt to provide anything more than a mind-bending and ridiculously amusing action-adventure thriller in which super-criminals and super-cops chase each other down and the three relics that once belonged to Cleopatra.
The title of Red Notice comes from Interpol’s wanted list, but the game is really a twisting treasure hunt that blurs the borders between good and evil. The film revolves on one of two prominent art thieves, Nolan Booth (played by the dependable professional gimmick Ryan Reynolds) or the equally seductive and aristocratic rival known only as the Bishop, is better at violating the law (Gal Gadot)
Egg hunt
The two skilled art thieves set out to retrieve three giant ornamental eggs – each valued about $300 million but only one at a time – that were supposedly given to Cleopatra by Antony but have since been spread throughout the globe over thousands of years of fake history. (Fictitious since Antony never gave Cleopatra any eggs.) Criminal profiler FBI agent John Hartley (Dwayne Johnson) seeks to find Booth and the Bishop as they rattle across the globe on a great Easter egg hunt. Still, the plot is straightforward: an entertaining, fast-paced, and sometimes humorous action-adventure picture that seems more like a spoof of the Uncharted video games than anything else. You’d be better off not even beginning the Netflix movie if you’re seeking for more plot depth and character development than the absolute minimum: this is solely entertainment to watch on a huge TV.
The script, created by Thurber himself, begins with a whirlwind as Booth steals Cleopatra’s first egg, just avoiding Hartley’s grasp, only to be caught when he returns home to another hemisphere. The Bishop then appears, grabs the treasure, and puts Hartley in hot water, as the Interpol agent in charge, Inspector Das (Ritu Arya), accuses the former FBI agent of stealing the diamond himself. Hartley is already sharing a cell with Booth in a remote Russian jail at the start of the film.
A classic action film from the past.
Thurber (who worked with The Rock in Skyscraper) directs the crazy and well-choreographed fights, chases, and other stunts with appropriate professionalism, since we’re definitely in the action movie age of the 1980s and 1990s. Of course, Ryan Reynolds, Dwayne Johnson, and Gal Gadot all deliver, whether it’s via amazing but unoriginal action scenes or sometimes somewhat silly dialogue. Gal Gadot attempts to outperform Reynolds on occasion, but she’s better whether she’s battling Wonder Woman-style or just looking very sensual and ornamental in her flaming red gown, which accentuates her thighs and bombshell body.
Hello there, Uncharted
After a time, the picture devolves into a succession of off-the-wall allusions and jokes that are reminiscent of previous films. Uncharted, Indiana Jones, True Lies, and even Gal Gadot reminds me of Lara Croft are all here. Apart from Gadot’s limited acting abilities, I believe she would make a much more entertaining, engaging, and convincing Lara Croft than Alicia Vikander did in the 2018 Tomb Raider film.
The same can be said of Ryan Reynolds, who, even in this position, frequently demonstrates how much better Nathan Drake he could be than Tom Holland in the Uncharted teaser. Unfortunately, based on the same trailer, Dwayne Johnson would be a better Sully than Mark Wahlberg.
Everything you’d expect from a bromance.
The typical “buddy movie” plot is recognized from a thousand previous films: two antagonists who (more or less…) form an inevitable “bromance” throughout the course of the film, while the femme fatale gets involved in everything. It’s a rather clichéd setup, but I believe it works due of the film’s parody nature and the performers’ regular performances.
Red Notice is a decent action-adventure picture that doesn’t want to be much more than that. I was anticipating a lot worse given how much the evaluators panned this picture (it now has a Metacritic score of 36), but I really like it quite a bit. It’s a lovely way to switch off your brain for two hours, and it’s plenty impressive if you’re viewing it on a 4K TV.
