Cult computer Games Of 1999 That We Couldn’t Tear Ourselves Away From

Nostalgic greetings to everyone! I’ve already written articles about almost every year of the last decade of the 20th century, and now it’s 1999’s turn.

This year was very fruitful for cult computer games that are still played today, so today I would like to recall those wonderful games that were released in 1999.

Quake 3 Arena

I would like to start my selection with first-person shooters, namely the game “Quake 3 Arena”. The third installment of the cult shooter did not get its subtitle “Arena” by accident, because unlike the first two parts, here we did not have to go through locations, killing standard enemies, but had to fight in the arena with equal opponents, who were either bots or real people if you played online.

According to the plot, a race called the Vadrigar created an eternal arena, where the best warriors of all time were sent to entertain the public with something resembling gladiatorial combat.

The game has several modes:

Single player is essentially a campaign, i.e., a walkthrough. The goal of the game is to complete 7 rounds (4 maps each), fighting bots in the arena. In the final round, we have to defeat the arena champion named Ziro.

Multiplayer is a game with opponents (bots and people). This mode includes 4 sub-modes, namely “Every man for himself”, “Team vs. Team,” “Tournament,” and “Capture the Flag.”

The game has gained widespread popularity not only among ordinary gamers, but also as an e-sports discipline.

Half-Life: Opposing Force

The original Half-Life game was released in 1998 and told the story of a scientist named Gordon Freeman who fights alien creatures that escaped from the world of Xen through portals as a result of an accident during an experiment.

A year later, an expansion pack called Half-Life: Opposing Force was released. The game takes place at the same time as the original Half-Life, but this time we control Corporal Adrian Shepard from the special HECU unit.

Shepard and his unit arrive at the Black Mass complex to carry out a special cleanup operation. But during the approach to the site, his tiltrotor is shot down, and Adrian loses consciousness.

When he wakes up, Shepard realizes that he has fallen behind his group, and now he is forced to fight his way through the aliens in search of other surviving soldiers and an evacuation point.

The gameplay of this expansion pack remains unchanged. Only some of the weapons have been modified, as well as the flashlight, which has been replaced with night vision goggles.

Unreal Tournament

Unreal Tournament is another third-person shooter game. As with Quake 3 Arena, Unreal Tournament features arena battles rather than single-player gameplay, as was the case in the first part of the game.

Moreover, the game was originally developed as a competitor to Quake 3 Arena and was even released a week and a half earlier, becoming a worthy rival to Quake. Unreal Tournament gained its popularity largely due to its excellent graphics, dynamism, and, of course, its well-developed artificial intelligence.

According to the plot, in order to suppress the uprising, the government of New Earth decided to organize legal fights to the death so that people could vent their negative emotions on others, voluntarily. As it turned out, this event proved to be so financially profitable that the mining company Liandri even organized a professional league to participate in a major tournament.

As for the gameplay, it is also similar to Quake 3 Arena. In single-player mode, the player must pass through arenas, fighting bots, and at the end, challenge the reigning champion, Xan Krigor, to earn the title of Grand Master.

Multiplayer mode includes several types:

Assault – players are divided into two teams. One team attacks the base, while the other defends it;

Capture the Flag – this is another team match, but the goal of the game is to capture the flag;

Deathmatch – a classic free-for-all where everyone fights for themselves. The goal is to kill as many opponents as possible;

Domination – a team game. Each team must capture the other team’s points, for which they are awarded points. The team with the most points wins;

Last Man Standing is the same as Deathmatch, except the goal here is not to kill as many opponents as possible, but to get as few deaths as possible.

Team Deathmatch is the same as regular Deathmatch, but this time the players are divided into teams.
