The best tank mounts in FFXIV are not always the most flashy, but they are often the most useful. Here, we rank the top ten tanks based on their overall performance.
The ff14 best tank 2021 is a great resource for players who want to know the best tanks in FFXIV. It includes a list of all the tanks, their stats and more.
You’ve just completed guiding a party of fresh players through a Duty Finder dungeon you’ve played before.
You took a breather before each boss to inform your squad on what to anticipate and when, and due to you, your group got through with few problems.
It’s just another day in the life of a tank, so no worries.
Taking on the position of an FFXIV meat-shield comes with a lot of responsibilities, whether you’re a professional tank who only does tank jobs or you’re just seeking to complete your roulettes for the day.
For some, this is a difficult task.
It’s a fascinating endeavor for a real tank enthusiast.
Square Enix is fully aware of players’ reluctance to take up the leadership and combat skills necessary for a successful run.
Square provides a two-tiered selection of wild animal-themed mounts to awaken your inner meat-sponge, sweetening the pot and incentivizing those of us less eager to be digital punching bags.
There are a total of eight mounts, each of which corresponds to a different tank:
Dark Knight = Panther Warrior = Bear Paladin = Lion Tiger + Gunbreaker
‘War’ is the name of the first tier, while ‘Battle’ is the name of the enhanced armor-clad tier.
Because the Battle mounts are snazzier (and more difficult to get) than their War counterparts, I’m comparing the War mounts first, then rating the Battle mounts.
It’s a battle of bestial barbarism suited for savage beasts. So come along with me as we rate all of the tank mounts in Final Fantasy XIV!
‘War’ Mounts for Tanks
4. Tiger of War
All Rights Reserved / SQUARE ENIX CO., LTD. Image source
I was hoping to like War Tiger. After all, Gunbreaker is the game’s newest tank.
So you’d think it’d be a bit more… current? compared to the others
While War Tiger has a nice color palette, one of those cat looks that manages to be both furious and cute, and the distinctive sabertooth grill, it’s the tail that puts this feline in last place.
To put it simply (pun intended), the tail is in an eerie valley of long relation to the rest of the body – not as stubby as a genuine sabertooth’s, but not long enough either.
New phrase alert: I wish there had been greater dedication to stumpiness.
The War Tiger Horn may be obtained by completing the Tank You, Gunbreaker II Achievement (complete any combination of 200 dungeons (lvl 61+), Extreme Trials (lvl 61+), Unreal trials, 50/60/70 Duty Roulette Dungeons, or Duty Roulette Leveling chores). As part of the daily prize, roulettes only count once each day).
3. Bear of War
All Rights Reserved / SQUARE ENIX CO., LTD. Image source
War Bear is a fearsome creature.
The issue is that you have to zoom in to see it.
From afar, it might easily be mistaken for another bear.
The Warrior you’ll need to take into duty to tame it has crimson eyes, red fur (particularly on the neck), and a war scar over its face.
This is the only tank mount that seems to have been in a battle.
Bears in Final Fantasy XIV have an unusual percentage.
They’re usually bottom-heavy, and War Bear is no exception: it’s basically a reskin of any bear you’d encounter in the overworld.
There’s far too much stuff in the trunk.
The War Bear Horn can be obtained by completing the But Someone’s Gotta Do It (Warrior) Achievement (complete 200 high-level, full-party tasks as Warrior). It may be any mix of Extreme Trials, Normal/Savage raids).
2. Lion of War
All Rights Reserved / SQUARE ENIX CO., LTD. Image source
The War Lion is more of a fantasy animal than the other mounts, since it is ivory white without the paws and has a well groomed mane.
And, since this is Final Fantasy, it advances entirely on the basis of principle.
And then there’s the musculature.
The War Lion is ripped, with more definition than a pro bodybuilder!
I’m not sure how it manages to seem so elegant in flight (did I mention they all fly? ), but its brawn appears to help it glide effortlessly.
While it lacks War Bear’s street cred for combat, War Lion’s visage and snarl indicate that it is ready to battle at any time.
How to get it: The War Lion is obtained in the same manner as the War Bear Horn, by completing the Paladin accomplishment.
1. Panther of War
All Rights Reserved / SQUARE ENIX CO., LTD. Image source
The War Panther is a nice ride.
Its tail and massive whiskers (which I’ve always believed look like weapons themselves) stream behind it in waves, and it has a magnificent red and black color scheme to match Dark Knight.
The inspired beast is unique to Final Fantasy – particularly the Coeurl – which makes War Panther stand out to me.
Coeurls have existed since the release of Final Fantasy II.
They have excessively long whiskers, resemble panthers or leopards, and utilize a technique called Blaster to immobilize opponents.
It wouldn’t be fair to the other mounts, but I’d like to see Blaster get some aesthetic mount action.
How to get it: The Panther Bell is obtained in the same manner as the War Bear/Lion Horn after completing the Dark Knight accomplishment.
‘Battle’ Mounts for Tanks
4. Panther in Combat

“But you rated War Panther first among the War mounts, what happened?” you may be wondering.
The solution lies in the manner in which they are updated.
The Battle mounts are essentially the same as the War mounts, but with sleeker armor.
They all seem like they’re ready for a fight now.
While Battle Panther is unquestionably better than War Panther, the armor is unimpressive when compared to the other “Battle” mounts.
You couldn’t tell whether someone was passing by on War or Battle Panther if you weren’t paying attention since the color is so close to the hide.
It’s definitely a new look.
Just doesn’t stand out enough from the basic model, and doesn’t stand out enough from the other Battle mounts.
The Battle Panther Bell is earned in the same manner as the War Tiger Horn, with the exception that the accomplishment is now named Tank You, Dark Knight III, and you must now complete 300 (!!!) trials/duties as Dark Knight.
Battle Lion is number three.

Battle Lion seems to be regal.
With the armor design and placement, all of the distinctive, high-fantasy, lionesque characteristics are enhanced.
It’s also the only piece of armor with a cloth component.
Battle Lion is distinguished from the other mounts by its armor, which serves a defensive rather than attacking purpose (in keeping with Paladin’s style).
Battle Panther’s armor is light, allowing it to move quickly.
And, as we’ll see, the other two have razor-sharp, dangerous edges.
The Battle Lion’s armor begs you to make a hole in it. The mane is even armored!
The Battle Lion Horn may be obtained in the same manner as the Battle Panther Bell, with the exception that the achievement (Tank You, Paladin III) must be earned when playing as Paladin.
2. Bear of War
All Rights Reserved / SQUARE ENIX CO., LTD. Image source
Battle Bear seems to be capable of wreaking havoc on the environment.
Consider it tearing across a battlefield, annihilating everything in its path.
Battle Bear, like Battle Lion, is an excellent mount for its equivalent tank, Warrior.
The metal is a beautiful fading black steel with red eyes that haven’t gone away. You may even see a sliver of War Bear’s crimson fur under the surface.
It also comes with these adorable, well, deadly claw gauntlets.
The greatest aspect is the armor’s form, which helps to balance off War Bear’s unusual proportions, particularly the massive spike sticking out between its shoulder blades.
The Battle Bear Horn is obtained in the same manner as all other Battle mounts, with the exception that the achievement is titled Tank You, Warrior III and must be achieved as a Warrior.
1. Fight Tiger

What a remarkable turnaround!
Battle Tiger addresses (and more) almost everything I didn’t like in War Tiger.
To begin with, Battle Tiger’s armor is the most detailed and upgraded of all the Battle mounts (with Battle Lion coming in a close second). This reflects the fact that Gunbreaker is the game’s newest tank.
The teeth have armored rings of their own!
Even the horn (a two-tiered weapon that resembles a gunblade) balances out the tooth proportion.
Finally, there’s the tail. It’s no longer that unusually long.
Finally, there seems to be a dedication — they went for a longer tail with spinal-looking armor, and that is the finest aspect for me.
The Battle Tiger Horn is obtained in the same manner as all other Battle mounts, with the exception that the accomplishment is titled Tank You, Gunbreaker III and must be achieved as Gunbreaker.
